
Introduction to Multicultural Education in Brazil
DAY 1: Fly overnight to Brazil.
Day 2 (Belo Horizonte): Arrive in Belo Horizonte, Brazil’s first planned modern city, meet your travel director and travel to your hotel. Enjoy an orientation tour before celebrating with a welcome dinner in a local steak house.
Day 3 (Belo Horizonte): Take a day trip to Inhotim, a stunning art gallery set amid 500,000 acres of botanical gardens. Enjoy a free evening to explore.
Day 4 (Belo Horizonte): Visit the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais (PUC-MINAS) for an overview on elementary education in Brazil and the legacy of Paulo Freire this morning. Meet young children and teachers at a public elementary school in a low-income neighborhood of Belo Horizonte. Continue with a visit to a private school with students from PUC Minas. Enjoy a free evening.
Day 5 (Belo Horizonte): This morning, visit the Center for Local Culture and Development (CPCD) in Curvelo. Learn the legacy of Tião Rocha, the founder of CPCD and a famous educator from Minas Gerais. In the evening enjoy a Brazilian rhythms workshop.
Day 6 (Rio de Janeiro): Fly to Rio de Janeiro and check into your hotel. Spend the balance of the day visiting the iconic Christ the Redeemer Statue.
Day 7 (Rio de Janeiro): Immerse yourself in Brazilian education today with a morning visit to a government educational department, followed by a stop at Projeto Gente, an educational project based on the use of technology and personalized teaching.
Day 8 (Rio de Janeiro): Team up with local guides to visit the Cantagalo favela this morning, then continue with to Criança Esperança, an educational project in the favela sponsored by national television channel TV Globo. Enjoy free time at the beach. Celebrate your trip with a farewell dinner.
Day 9 (Overnight Flight): Take some more free time for the beach and to visit Sugar Loaf Mountain before catching your overnight flight back to the United States.
Day 11 (Krakow): This morning, hop in a Trabant car, a symbol of the Eastern bloc, and visit one of only two entirely pre-planned socialist realist cities in the world, Nowa Huta. In the afternoon, travel to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, which has been continuously producing salt since the 13th century. Enjoy dinner in the evening.
Day 12: Travel to the airport for your return flight to the United States.
